In Sanskrit, the word “Deepawali”means – A row of lights. It is celebrated as the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. According to Hindu Mythology, Diwali is a festival which commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya along with his wife Sita, brother Lakshmana and ardent devotee Hanuman after defeating the demon king Ravana. Since then the Hindus have been following the tradition by celebrating the festival with pomp and fervour. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped and people believe that it brings wealth, prosperity and success to all. People make beautiful patterns on the floor called Rangoli and light candles and diyas to decorate their houses. People also buy new clothes and look forward to exchanging gifts with their family and friends. It spreads the message of love, happiness and unity among people and makes them fall in love with their culture. The festival teaches us that good always wins over evil and that we must eradicate darkness with light.
